K. Bakeer Al-Mateen, M.D.

K. Bakeer Al-Mateen, M.D. Dr. Al-Mateen graduated from Howard University College of Medicine in Washington DC in 1984 and completed his pediatric residency three years later at St. Christopher's Children's Hospital in Philadelphia PA. After 2 years of general pediatric practice in Philadelphia, Dr. Al-Mateen entered a three year fellowship in neonatology at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he remained on its faculty until 2001. During this time he also earned a Masters of Science in Health Administration from VCU's School of Allied Health in 1999, was the director of VCU’s Extracorporeal Life Support Program, and was instrumental in the creation of Children's Hospital's Transitional Care Unit as its first Program Director.

As a member of the VCU faculty, Dr. Al-Mateen was a leader amongst his colleagues in the treatment of newborns with respiratory failure. His expertise in the use of cutting edge medical technologies in the newborn intensive care unit was instrumental in saving the lives of numerous very sick newborns. He served as mentor and teacher to numerous medical students and residents, many of whom practice medicine here in the Richmond metropolitan area.

Dr. Al-Mateen is board certified in general pediatrics and neonatology. He is dedicated to providing quality, empathetic care to all of his patients. His areas of particular interest include the follow-up care of term and premature newborns with technology dependent medical problems. Our goal is to maximize the developmental potential of this unique and special patient population through comprehensive care plans to better serve their needs.

Dr. Debra Koenig Cantor, D.O.

Dr. Debra Koenig Cantor, D.O. Dr Debra Koeing Cantor received her undergraduate degree from Touro College in Manhattan and her medical degree from Nova Southeastern University in Florida.  She is a fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Pediatricians.  She completed a rotating internship at the Atlantic City Medical Center in Atlantic City, New Jersey before completing her residency at Virginia Commonwealth University in 1998.  She was an associate member of one of Richmond’s largest pediatric practices in Richmond’s west end for six and a half years.  Her extensive background in pediatrics and infectious enthusiasm for the care of children makes Dr. Cantor one of our most valued partners in the Swift Creek Pediatrics family.

Dr. Cantor’s interest in assisting first time parents with the mysteries of normal newborn care is well known in the community.  She is a frequent guest of parenting and baby care classes in some of Richmond’s finest hospitals.  Many of her current patients are from parents who attended one her classes.

Her personal experience as a mother lends credibility to her professional advice. She and her husband, Paul, are the proud parents of four young children, including a set of twin boys. She says, “One of the greatest benefits of being a pediatrician is the chance I have to observe children and their parents grow and develop over time. It is so fulfilling to be a part of this development process.”  During her years in private practice, she has had the opportunity to learn that there is more to being an effective pediatrician than what you learn during medical school and residency.  “It is wonderful to share in the joy of a newborn’s arrival, to celebrate the developmental milestones, and to educate and reassure families during times of illness” she says.  “I enjoy caring for children of all ages, realizing that the act of parenting is by far the most important and rewarding, yet challenging, role we play in life.”

Roxana Serran Bantle, M.D.

Roxana Serran Bantle, M.D.Dr. Dr. Bantle earned her bachelors degree and Masters in Public Health Administration and Policy from The University of Oklahoma where she later graduated from its College of Medicine in 1998. She completed her pediatric internship and residency at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. Her clinical leadership and knowledge were instrumental in her being selected to spend an additional year as the program’s Chief Resident. Aside from the vast administrative duties inherent in the Chief Resident role, Dr. Bantle was responsible for mentoring medical students and pediatric house officers while maintaining a panel of private patients for which she provided clinical care of the highest quality.

Dr. Bantle’s particular area of interest is providing state of the art clinical care to diverse populations across the socioeconomic spectrum. Her ability to communicate with families in English and Spanish is an additional quality that allows her to meet this objective for a wide range of children in the Richmond area. We are honored to have Dr. Bantle continue her medical career at Swift Creek Pediatrics.

Tammy Corsa, RN, CPNP

Tammy Corsa, RN, CPNP Tammy Corsa comes to Swift Creek Pediatrics with a wealth of nursing experience from Virginia Commonwealth University’s (VCU) Children’s Medical Center and Henrico Doctors’ Hospital’s pediatric floor.  She worked as a nurse practitioner in a local Chesterfield County pediatric practice prior to joining Swift Creek Pediatrics and continues as the Director of the Healthy Hearing Screening Program at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital.  She received her bachelor’s of science in nursing from the University of Southwestern Louisiana.  She received her master’s in science degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. Tammy has worked with patients in a variety of healthcare settings in her career that brings added value to the services provided through our practice.

One of Swift Creek Pediatrics’ areas of special interests is the care of children requiring technologic assistance to function effectively at home.  Tammy, through her affiliation with a local home care agency, and her several years of experience providing clinical and educational support is more than able to serve the needs of this unique patient population.  She is quite comfortable with the follow up needs of children in these settings and the continuing educational support required for parents to function effectively in an unfamiliar role.

Fortunately, the vast majority of our parents will get to know Tammy as she assists them in caring for their newborns.  Mothers who choose to breastfeed will appreciate the educational and technical support she provides after discharge home from the hospital.  Please call or make an appointment to visit our office to learn more about the services that Tammy can provide your children in her roles as educator and health care provider at Swift Creek Pediatrics.
